Most of you might think that the best views of Santorini are from Fira and Oia. At least this is the way it is advertised.
If you google ‘best views of Santorini’ and you click on images, results will show you mainly only pictures of the capital of the island until the village of the sunset, very often you will get pictures of views from pools and hotels. As if the south of the island would not exist (apart from the Red Beach).
You know what? WRONG!
I consider myself very lucky: I live in a quiet and authentic village, can’t complain of my everyday view and still if I want to see the volcano, the Caldera, as we call it, it’s just a short walk away from my door.
I wander around the narrow streets spotting in the back my ‘goal’, the volcano, and I keep walking till I arrive in front of this astonishing sight.
The views from Akrotiri are some of the best you can look for in Santorini. You not only get to fully see Nea and Palea Kameni (the 2 small islands which create the volcano), you get to see the island in its entirety: Pyrgos, Fira, Oia, Thirassia.
A map on your hands and you will understand that we are at the very south of the island and this point of view is strategic if you want to ‘feel’ the unique half-moon shape of Santorini.
This is why you should not always trust google 100%.
This is why you need someone local to show you around.
The knowledge of the island does not only come from the eye of the viewer (the tourist) and from what you can find on google, Instagram, Facebook, …
The most striking knowledge of a place comes from the locals: ask me, ask Kathrin, ask Arsenio and Juli, ask someone else you know who lives here and you will get an uncommon point of view of Santorini.
